Specialist programs

Find out about the specialist subjects our school offers.

Arts

At Burton Primary School, The Arts curriculum is taught as a specialist subject, providing students with a unique opportunity to explore and develop their creativity across a variety of art forms. Our specialist-led program includes visual arts, drama, media arts, music, and dance, allowing students to express themselves in meaningful ways—whether through drawing, painting, acting, creating digital projects, playing instruments, or dance.

Each lesson is carefully designed and aligned with the Australian Curriculum V9 and South Australian Curriculum to foster critical thinking, creative problem-solving, and self-confidence. With guidance from our specialist arts teacher, students develop and learn essential skills and techniques, explore diverse artistic styles, and gain an understanding of the cultural importance of the arts.

Through The Arts, students at Burton Primary learn to create, explore, and reflect on their work and the work of others, helping them grow personally and broaden their understanding of the world.

Physical Education

Students can develop team play and team building skills through our specialist sports program. The program is run by a specialist teacher and volunteer parent coaches. Our program includes:

  • SAPSASA events (Cricket, Football, Rugby, Soccer and Netball)
  • team sports
  • sports day
  • swimming and aquatics lessons.
  • BPS Cup

We also offer lunchtime activities in the gym, which vary each week from basketball to dancing.

Science

Students from Reception to Year 6 take part in 100 minutes Science lessons each week. The program covers the four conceptual Science strands of Biological, Earth and Space, Chemical, and Physical sciences throughout the year. Students participate in scientific studies exploring plants, animals, geology, properties of materials and forces, while developing experimental, observational and team work skills.

Students through hands on investigations develop how to conduct a fair test, make predictions, observations, draw scientific diagrams and analyse results data.

They develop scientific questions, knowledge and communicate ideas, explanations and processes using scientific representations in a variety of ways, including multi-modal texts.

Auslan

At Burton Primary School Auslan is our main language that all students from Reception – Year 6 have the opportunity to learn. Auslan at our school is a second language pathway, which allows students who are not members of the Deaf community to learn the language. Learners may also include deaf or hard of hearing children who use another signed language.

There are two main strands in the Auslan language in the curriculum and they are: communicating meaning in Auslan and understanding language and culture.

Communicating meaning in Auslan:

  • Interacting in Auslan
  • Mediating meaning in and between languages
  • Creating text in Auslan

Understanding language and culture:

  • Understanding systems of language
  • Understanding the interrelationship of language, culture and identity

Auslan at Burton Primary School is about connecting students to the deaf community, whilst following our school values (Teamwork, Respect, Inclusion, Excellence and Responsibility). This supports students to feel confident in their signing skills and to be able to sign in the community. Students have a variety of meaningful opportunities to be involved in Auslan and because of this Auslan has been embedded throughout our school.
