Wellbeing

School Values

At Burton Primary School, we emphasise five core values—Respect, Teamwork, Inclusion, Excellence and Responsibility—that guide our behaviour expectations and enhance student engagement. These values are taught to students and reinforced daily. To encourage positive behaviour, we use a token system aligned with these values. This approach is part of the Department for Education’s Positive Behaviour for Learning framework, which aims to boost student engagement and minimise exclusionary discipline.

Every Friday, Sports Captains collect and count tokens at both class and sport colour levels. The results are shared with the school community during assemblies. Throughout the year, Sports Day teams compete for the ‘Value Cup’, while classes work towards a group reward every three weeks. This system not only promotes our school values but also fosters a sense of teamwork and achievement among students.

Positive Behaviour for Learning

At Burton Primary School, we use Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) to support and develop student behaviour. PBL is proactive, focusing on teaching desired behaviours to all students. It also provides individualised support for those who need it. This approach aligns with our school values and adapts educational programs to meet diverse needs, recognising neurological differences.

Our goals are to:

  • Build positive relationships with students
  • Set clear behaviour expectations
  • Teach expected behaviours and routines
  • Develop learning, behaviour, and social-emotional skills

Benefits include:

  • More positive behaviour
  • Better learning engagement
  • Improved social-emotional wellbeing
  • Positive, respectful relationships
  • A safe, predictable learning environment for all students, including those with trauma or Autism.

Interoception Room

At Burton Primary School, we have three dedicated interoception rooms to support students’ emotional and sensory needs. These rooms are located in the Administration building, Junior Primary Section, and Special Option building. Each room is equipped with tools like body socks, crash mats, fidget toys, and colouring activities to help students regulate their emotions. We teach students how to use these tools and recognise their emotions, understanding that every child is unique and has different needs for regulation.

Pastoral Care Worker

Come and meet Ashton, our Pastoral Care Worker. Ashton is dedicated to supporting the well-being of our students, and families. He provides a compassionate and listening ear, offering guidance and support in times of need. Whether it’s helping students navigate personal challenges, fostering a positive school environment, or connecting families with community resources, Ashton plays a vital role in nurturing a caring and inclusive school community.

Ashton will be onsite Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and will offer in class support, small group social skills activities as well as recess and lunch structured play.

Onsite psychologist

Our onsite psychologist is committed to supporting the mental health and well-being of our students. They provide a safe and confidential space for students to discuss their concerns and work through challenges. Through individual sessions or family sessions the psychologist helps students develop coping strategies, build resilience, and enhance their emotional and social skills. By collaborating with teachers and families, our psychologist ensures a holistic approach to each student’s well-being, fostering a supportive and nurturing school environment.

Food hub

We are part of the One Box Program, an initiative that provides our families in need with a free weekly box full of fresh fruit, vegies, and bread over the full school year. By offering this assistance, we aim to alleviate some of the pressures families may face and promote overall well-being. The program is confidential and designed to support families in a respectful and caring manner. If you or someone you know could benefit from this program, please reach out to our school for more information.

Breakfast club

Join our Breakfast Club for a nutritious and energising start to the day! Open to all students, the club provides a welcoming environment where children can enjoy a healthy breakfast with friends. It’s a great opportunity to fuel up for the day ahead, fostering both physical and mental well-being. Our Breakfast Club also encourages social interaction and builds a sense of community within the school. Come along to start your day with a smile and a healthy meal!

Extra curriculum

  • Children’s University

Explore the exciting world of Children’s University! This program offers engaging, voluntary learning activities outside regular school hours, including before school, lunchtime, after school, and during holidays. Children can choose activities based on their interests, all of which connect to potential university studies.

Children’s University Learning Destinations are marked with a special sticker. Kids can take their Passport to Learning, participate in activities, and earn stamps for their time spent learning. The more activities they complete, the more stamps they collect, bringing them closer to graduation.

Once enough hours are collected, children graduate at a special ceremony in an iconic location, receiving a certificate while dressed in a cap and gown, just like university students.

  • Choir

Join our vibrant school choir and experience the joy of music! Our choir welcomes students of all skill levels to come together and explore a diverse range of songs. Through regular rehearsals, students will develop their vocal skills, learn about harmony, and build confidence in a supportive environment. Participating in the choir also offers opportunities to perform at school events and community gatherings, fostering teamwork and a sense of achievement. Whether you’re a seasoned singer or just starting out, our choir is a wonderful way to express yourself and make new friends.
